Matilda’s father loses everything because of his irrepressible gambling, including her hand in marriage. To avoid becoming the wife of the brutal Earl of Tark, she courageously flees for her freedom and secures a survival position in the kitchen of a London Inn. While her culinary abilities are exploited by the innkeeper, she has captured the attention of the gallant and war-wounded Major Bruce, who invites her to work for him at his Scottish castle.
